Drivers revealed as master hagglers | Car Loan 4 U

The art of haggling is alive and well amongst Britain?s motoring population, with a bit of skilful bartering helping drivers to knock off an average of almost ?1,000 from the price of their chosen car.

Three in five motorists pay less than the advertised price for their new car, with men emerging as the gender with the best gift of gab when it comes to haggling vehicle prices, securing an additional discount of ?300. The average saving made by male motorists was ?1,029 compared to female drivers? ?706.

The findings from Auto Trader Owners? Guide, a quarterly examination of the automotive marketplace, show that the average saving made by motorists in the third quarter of the year was ?939.

?It?s clearly a great time to be a car buyer ? whether new or used ? and this research shows the importance of really considering what you want from your new purchase, and how much you?re prepared to pay for it,? said Keith Lewis of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

?The more consumers understand what they?re buying, especially given the whole range of safety, security and entertainment options available, the happier they will be when they do the deal.?

However, the report also revealed that advertised prices in the same quarter were on average ?376 lower than for the same period two years ago.

Nathan Coe, Group Director of Auto Trader, argues that this fact makes it hard to determine if the buyers or the market are responsible for the savings.

?With so many sellers getting less than they were expecting for their cars it raises the question of whether this is people not valuing their cars appropriately or whether it?s buyers taking advantage of a weak market,? he said.

If you are considering a new car purchase, best car finance deals could be an option.
