Bad Piggies for iOS Review - Video Games | Games Reviews Online ...

After convincing us to fling furious fowls at pigs behind battlements, Rovio decides to let us know the Swine Side Story in Bad Piggies. And makes an intriguing if not quite a compelling case for playing it.

It has been almost three years since Rovio made throwing birds from catapults at pigs, a rage on handsets and tablets, leading to what many call the casual gaming phenomenon. The charm of Angry Birds was its utter simplicity - you just placed a bird in a catapult, pulled the string back, worked out angles of attack, and let fly. There was hardly any learning curve, the game was fun, thanks to some entertaining sounds and animations (many was the person who went ?aww? on seeing the birds cheer after a successful demolition). The game launched millions of downloads, spawned a few sequels, but after a while, came complaints of monotony, accompanied by the query: ?Why don?t the pigs do something??

?The story revolves around recovering an egg-capturing plan of the pigs that gets lost.

Well, they do now, thanks to Rovio?s new game dedicated entirely to them. Bad Piggies (Read our first impression here) is all about getting those pesky pigs you pelted in the Angry Birds? games from one place to another. Literally. The game?s storyline is expectedly thin - the pigs strike upon a plan to capture some eggs, and draw up elaborate plans to get them. But then promptly go ahead and lose the plan. Your job in the game is simple - help build devices and machines that will help the pigs fly, drive and generally end up in the proximity of the tatters of the plans that are scattered all over the place. How smoothly you do so and how many bonus items you pick up on the way will determine how many stars your performance gets.

?There is a design hint book that will help you get the parts in the right places

The is no shortage of levels ( with more promised) and the game has the same richly coloured and yet simple look of the Angry Birds franchise. But that is where all similarities with that particular game end. For, Bad Piggies is clearly a game targeted at a crowd that is looking for something more than just whiling away a few minutes. There are no catapults or even birds in sight and the stress here is on building things rather than destroying them, and this is by no means a cakewalk - you are given some components (wheels, propellors, balloons, boxes, et al) and build contraptions to transport the pigs by slotting them into the relevant category in a grid and then hitting the ?play? button to see where they take their passengers - to ye tattered scrolls or cases of TNT, or heck, if they move at all, although you get a design book to help you in the building process.

You build vehicles for the pigs by dragging and dropping components into a grid

As you go up the difficulty levels, you will have opportunities to control the speed of these ?pig transporters?, and will often find yourself operating in time constraints. Of course, the vehicles themselves will get more complex and the grid will grow bigger and have more slots, culminating in a sandbox level that will leave you feel right in a garage. The animations played smoothly on both our iPhone 4S and new iPad, even though they were not quite as much fun as Angry Birds - there simply were fewer giggles and cheers and the pigs expressions? were pretty much the same we had seen in the Angry Birds series - and their determination to stay cheerful irrespective of the consequences of their quest can grate after a while. Sound and music quality are super - the latter is a potential ringtone!

Just where your contraption ends up, with what and in what shape earns you stars

That said, we would be committing the sin of falsehood if we said that we did not have fun playing Bad Piggies. But, ?twould be an even greater falsehood to say that it is as compelling as Angry Birds was. It is in fact a very different game, and one that requires far more patience. It takes some getting used to, and will at times set your teeth on edge, especially as the levels get tougher. Yes, it is a fun enough game for those who like to use their little grey cells while playing games, but traditional Angry Birds? fans should be ready to either exercise patience or be ready to just a bit of disappointment. As a stand alone puzzler, we found it not to be quite in the same league as compared to Where?s My Water and Cut The Rope, which not only had ?cuter? protagonists but also were a whole lot easier to play even at higher difficulty levels.

Don't get fooled by the familiar looks - Bad Piggies is nothing like Angry Birds

Angry Piggies will top download charts because of its association with the Angry Birds? franchise. Ironically, it is that very franchise that burdens it. Download it if you want a very different, challenging experience. If you are a diehard Angry Birds fan and want something on similar lines, be ready to be a bit disappointed. This is a very different kettle of...er...pigs.

Personal Storage Ottawa Helps Free Up Space in Your Home Or Business

Author (SuPhung671). Submitted on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

When it comes to freeing up space in your home, you need a company that offers personal storage ottawa services. Getting affordable personal storage is important when your home is either too small or far too cluttered to be comfortable. Personal storage Ottawa units allow you to store all of those items in a safe and secure environment. You don't have to worry about anybody accessing these items, since you will be able to lock the storage unit so that nobody can get to it. There a lot of benefits to owning a personal storage unit, below you will find some of the items that are useful to be stored in these containers.

Yard equipment

We don't often mow or clean up our yards, so storing yard equipment in a personal storage unit is a great opportunity. If you have a lot of machinery like weed whackers, lawnmowers, tremors and more, storing this in your personal storage unit gets it out of your home and away from your sight. The best part about it is that storage units aren't really that expensive. In general, a typical storage unit will be well under $100 per month. This allows you to save money and get all of your garden equipment stored safely and securely in a unit that you can access when you need it. Anytime that you go to clean your yard, you can simply drive down to your unit and pick up your items.

A spare car
Believe it or not, storage unit facilities will actually let you store a spare car inside one of their containers. Lots of people have spare cars around their home, but this can really take away from the overall appeal of your home. If you have a spare car that just sits in your front yard or driveway, you can store that car in a storage unit so that you no longer have to see it anymore. Surely, you and your neighbors are going to appreciate this opportunity.

Antiques
Antiques can be something that we want to hold onto for as long as possible. Storing these antiques somewhere that they're going to be safe is important so that you can one day sell them and get a return on investment. If you have lots of antique furniture or items in your home, rather than keeping them in the garage or sitting somewhere that they really don't belong, you can store them in a storage unit. It doesn't matter what type of antiques you own, storage units will accept whatever it is you want to bring into the facility.

Business supplies
Often times, businesses will have far too many supplies in order to keep all of them at their place of business. Additionally, if you operate out of your home, it can be difficult to keep track of business supplies and organize them efficiently. If you'd like a place to store some of the things that you purchase for your business, a storage unit is a great opportunity to do so.

Buried in debt, Spain?s fishermen blame EU policies

    POSTED: 02:36 a.m. HST, Sep 30, 2012

CADIZ, Spain >> Millions of Spaniards took advantage of cheap financing to buy new houses during Spain?s decade-long economic boom and housing bubble beginning in the late 1990s. The country?s fishermen, many encouraged by European Union subsidies, did much the same for their own homes away from home: new boats.

Since then, they have run into problems: declining fish stocks, tighter quotas on catches, rising operating costs and a sharp economic downturn that has slashed both fish prices and demand.

The impact has devastated much of Spain?s coastal economy. It has also generated intensifying criticism of EU policies that, environmental groups and experts say, have increased fishing communities? dependency on subsidies to make up for the decline in both revenues and fish populations, even as the bloc continues to pay generous subsidies to scrap older vessels to upgrade Europe?s fleet. The new boats are typically bigger and more powerful, adding pressure on declining fish populations.

Coastal regions, they warn, are in the grip of a vicious downward spiral, with steep economic and environmental costs that they are urging leaders to halt.

?Spain has been one of the worst examples of using public money to modernize and increase the capacity of the fleet,? said Saskia Richartz of Greenpeace in Brussels, the group?s EU oceans policy director. ?We have now reached a crisis point, with a generation of fishermen whose boats are owned by banks and who have no fish to catch.?

In coastal areas like Sanlucar de Barrameda, a town in the south near Cadiz, as fishermen struggle to repay the mortgages on their vessels, many say they resent that bloc policies distorted their financial incentives and then left them high and dry once Spain?s economic crisis hit.

The EU stopped directly financing boat purchases in 2005 to curtail the size of Europe?s fleet, but for many here the damage was already done. Jose Antonio Diaz Leon, the president of the fish market of Sanlucar, home to about 100 fishing boats, estimated that ?95 percent of the owners here have a mortgage on their boat, which many simply can no longer afford.?

Among Sanlucar?s disillusioned is Jose Odero, who bought a new boat worth almost $650,000, with twice the tonnage of his previous vessel. Although the world financial crisis was already under way at the time, Odero said he had no difficulty securing a bank mortgage and had felt confident that the investment would translate into higher revenues. He declined to say whether he received an EU subsidy.

The investment was ?a massive mistake,? Odero said, as quota restrictions, falling fish prices and rising fuel costs left his income stagnant. This year Odero was forced to ask his bank to delay his mortgage payments of about $1,025 a month.

?I?ve been given a bit more time, but I?m slowly drowning in financial problems,? Odero added. ?I would love to sell my boat now, but there?s nobody willing to pay decent money for it.?

His story is repeated in places like the northwestern city of Vigo, Spain?s biggest fishing port, where fishing helps sustain about 60,000 of its 300,000 residents, according to local officials.

Claudio Fernandez Ibanez, chief executive of Hermanos Fernandez Ibanez, a fish brokerage house in Vigo, said many fishermen had no choice but to scale back or shut down.

?Those who have not managed to amortize fully their boat purchase costs before the crisis are now really suffering, trying to sell unaffordable boats for which there is really no demand,? he said.

Given the economic crisis, he said, Spanish consumers are downgrading to cheaper and largely imported fish, with prices for products like swordfish dropping 40 percent this year.

?The EU is putting all the focus on the environmental impact of fishing and ignoring completely our economic problems,? he said.

Wholesalers like Santiago Manzanares are sharing the pain. Sando, his family-owned distributor of frozen fish to Vigo-area restaurants, has had a 40 percent drop in revenue from a year ago, Manzanares said. Before the crisis, Sando would buy enough supplies in June to cover the whole summer. This year ?we?ve been stocking only a week ahead, given how uncertain demand has become,? he said.

On a recent day, as inspectors working for Spain?s agriculture ministry boarded a boat to measure nets and check the catch stashed on ice in the holds, the captain, Enrique Yegua, confessed that he was less concerned about any possible violation of regulations than about falling prices. Usisa, a producer of canned seafood that Yegua supplies, was now paying less than 30 cents per pound of mackerel, down almost 7 cents from two years ago, he said.

?We?re being inspected a lot, but what will determine whether I continue working is not a possible fine but whether fish prices continue to fall,? said Yegua, fishing in the Gulf of Cadiz.

While European politicians are negotiating over the fisheries policies that they will pursue after 2013, Spain remains by far the largest beneficiary of European subsidies, receiving slightly more than a quarter of a European fisheries fund worth $5.5 billion.

Environmental groups have denounced such subsidies, which have encouraged many boat owners to upgrade and then scrap boats within just a few years. Between 1994 and 2006, owners of 860 European vessels ? 326 of them Spanish ? used subsidies this way, according to a study by Fishsubsidy.org, a project financed by EU Transparency, which analyzes the disbursement of European public money.

Manuel Varela Lafuente, a fisheries expert and professor at the University of Vigo, said larger Spanish operators should reduce their reliance on subsidies, especially for fleet modernization. But he added, ?we?re also talking about a country full of small fishing communities that simply cannot survive the current economic crisis without subsidies.?

On Aug. 16, the agriculture ministry temporarily closed the anchovy fishery by the Gulf of Cadiz, saying it had reached the EU quota. The local fishing association warned that the ban could ruin 100 boat owners. Such steps have increased dependence on ?compensation subsidies,? which pay fishermen for the fish they can no longer catch, sustaining what is verging on a phantom industry.

Environmentalists say such subsidies continue to warp the industry?s economic incentives. Until 2013, according to Greenpeace, Spanish fishermen will receive domestic and EU subsidies worth almost a fifth of the value of their catch, equivalent to around $10,000 per fisherman per year.

In one of the more daunting estimates of decline, a study published a year ago by Oceana, which promotes ocean conservation, said that of the bloc?s 27 countries, 13 had been getting more subsidies than the value of the fish that arrive in their ports.

LA billionaire covets sports teams to promote health

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bio-tech entrepreneur Patrick Soon-Shiong, the richest man in Los Angeles, intends to make a bid for sports and real estate firm Anschutz Entertainment Group and wants to bring a National Football League team back to the second most populous U.S. city.

The 60-year-old sports fan, a surgeon who started and sold two pharmaceutical companies for a combined $8.6 billion, told Reuters in an interview this week that he wants to use Anschutz concert tours and sports events, and his NFL team's players, to encourage L.A. school children to adopt healthier lifestyles.

"The NFL can do so much for this city," said Soon-Shiong in an interview at his west Los Angeles office. "Kids really rally around sports and entertainment and it could be a major catalyst to demonstrate what you can do in life by living better."

Soon-Shiong grew up in South Africa, where he became a doctor in his early 20s and treated tuberculosis victims. After moving to the United States and becoming a surgeon at UCLA, he developed innovative methods to treat diabetes and cancer patients.

The sale of his two companies for $8.6 billion made him the wealthiest person in Los Angeles, according to Forbes magazine, although he still is not a household name in the city.

Under his plan, players would serve as mentors, encouraging students to eat better and exercise more. The most sophisticated methods used to deal with sports injuries could be shared with local doctors.

"It's important to motivate students in middle and high school. That's when you can help reduce diabetes and obesity that cause illness," he said. "Maybe we can turn that illness to wellness."

If he's successful in L.A., Soon-Shiong said he intends to make it a national program.

    FORMING INVESTMENT TEAM

Sources say the billionaire is assembling a group of other Los Angeles business and civic leaders to buy AEG. Soon-Shiong did not discuss details of his bid.

Sources also said his buyer group includes private equity firm Guggenheim Partners, which this spring led a group that bought the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team for $2 billion.

AEG, which is owned by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz, said on September 19 it had hired Blackstone Advisory Partners to sell the company. It is expected to fetch $6 billion to $8 billion, according to investment bankers with knowledge of its assets.

Separately, Los Angeles for years has wanted to bring back a professional football team, and Soon-Shiong acknowledged that he has met with the NFL to lay out his plan to buy a team.

AEG owns the Los Angeles Kings pro hockey franchise, the L.A. Galaxy soccer club and a 20 percent stake in the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. It owns or operates sports and entertainment arenas worldwide, including the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and promotes concerts and other live action events.

Soon-Shiong's family foundation has committed $1 billion to transform healthcare and intends to create a national health superhighway by which doctors can share biotech information and other data to improve diagnosis and care.

His foundation gave $135 million to the Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica and $100 million to reopen Martin Luther King Hospital, which serves lower income patients in south Los Angeles.

A basketball fan who played in pickup games until tearing his Achilles tendon three years ago, Soon-Shiong owns a 5 percent stake in the Lakers, and he said he has become friends with superstar Kobe Bryant and other players, whom he sees as role models for young fans.

In March, he and his actress wife, Michelle Chan, endowed the Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Sports Science at Saint John's, which will focus on sports medicine, physical therapy and stem cell research to help heal injuries.

It works with sports medicine doctors, including the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic that treats the Kings, Lakers and L.A. Dodgers.

Saint John's announced the sports science center at a dinner honoring AEG president Tim Leiweke in March, six months before Soon-Shiong showed his interest in the conglomerate.

Our Expert Picks The Top Five Tech Products of 2012 ? Most ...

MMNPL?s Technology Expert Curtis Silver has more than experience when it comes to technology. Silver has written and worked for Wired.com, Gunnar Optiks, Technorati.com, and Digital Dads (writer of the 2nd best NFL column on the internet). Check out what our expert expects to be the most memorable tech products this year!

    1. WiiU ? What needs to be said about the first next generation system to be released by the big three? While Playstation and Xbox are still refining their next devices, Nintendo is first to the game ? just in time for Christmas. With a handheld and portable controller, updating to HD and integrating more social factors, the WiiU is sure to be a huge hit.

    2. Nokia Lumia 920 ? This is the last chance for a Windows phone to grab enough market share to keep making Windows phones. The Lumia 920 is probably the sleekest, fastest mobile device that carries the Windows operating system. This is a nice phone. Easy to use, intuitive and streamlined. But is a multitude of colors enough to compete with Android and iOS? You are going to see more of these on the street in the coming months, as people realize that the fair market of operating systems makes for a stronger little guy.

    3. iPhone 5 ? I?m not a fan of the iPhone, but certainly of what it represents. While the iPhone is no more spectacular than the Samsung Galaxy III or the Motorola Razr, Apple still is able to not only innovate in their design and operating system, but easily profit while doing so. Love or hate Apple, their contribution to the hipster lifestyle can?t be ignored.

    4. Origin PC Eon Laptops ? Origin, a company made up of the former brains behind Alienware, is quickly becoming one of the elite manufacturers of high end gaming computers. Their EON line of gaming laptops include 3D options and amazing graphics and sound. Next time you go to PAX, E3 or CES check out how many gaming rigs are Origin PC?s. The Origin EON is going to bring Origin into the arena dominated by companies like Dell, and eventually push them out. Bottom line: if you are a gamer, you want an Origin.

    5. Makerbot Replicator ? An open source 3D printer? Yes please. This represents the future of so many independent industries, from animation to architecture and beyond. While the process still needs some refinement, this printer is the first step in a fairly new technology that is going to redefine how we mold and view the world.

Which do you think will be the most memorable? Let us know you expert opinion!

Netanyahu's 'red line': Does drawing a line actualy work?

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu literally drew a 'red line' on a simple diagram of Iran's nuclear program. How have red lines worked out in the past?

    By Robert H. Reid,?Associated Press / September 28, 2012

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu draws a red line on a graphic of a bomb as he addresses the 67th United Nations General Assembly at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

In a dramatic gesture, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a "red line" on a diagram of Iran's nuclear program and called on the world to do the same to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons ? a step the Iranians insist they don't intend to take.

Red lines, Netanyahu declared, "don't lead to war." Instead, he argued Thursday before the U.N. General Assembly that "red lines prevent war" by making clear the limits of international tolerance.

Eytan Gilboa, an expert on U.S.-Israel relations at Bar Ilan University, said red lines are considered less severe a warning than an ultimatum, which includes a threat of consequences.

History shows that the effectiveness of such warnings often depends on a country's resolve to follow through and accept the consequences.

    Line in the sand

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sent soldiers and tanks into neighboring Kuwait and annexed the tiny, oil-rich nation as Iraq's 19th province. Six days later, President George H. W. Bush told Americans that "a line in the sand has been drawn" and ordered U.S. troops to Kuwait's neighbor Saudi Arabia.

Armed with a U.N. Security Council resolution and congressional authorization to use force, U.S. and allied jets launched air attacks on Baghdad and other Iraqi targets. The ground assault began Feb. 24 and within days the Iraqis had been driven out of Kuwait. Iraq accepted a cease-fire on March 3 and Kuwaiti sovereignty was restored.

    Cuban missile crisis

One of history's most dangerous red-line moments came in October 1962 when U.S. President John F. Kennedy revealed to the world that the Soviet Union had been installing missile sites in Cuba, and demanded that Premier Nikita Khrushchev remove them. For 13 tense days, the world seemed headed for nuclear war. Kennedy declared a quarantine on all offensive military equipment headed for Cuba ? effectively a "red line" around the Caribbean island nation ? and threatened to turn back any ships carrying armaments. For their part, the Soviets tested a 300-kiloton hydrogen bomb as a reminder of Moscow's military might.

Pregnant rats exposed to an industrial pollutant passed on a variety of diseases to their unexposed great-grandkids, according to a study published Wednesday.

Washington State University scientists found that third-generation offspring of pregnant rats exposed to dioxin had high rates of kidney and ovarian diseases as well as early onset of puberty. They also found changes in the great-grandsons' sperm.

The great-grandkids ? the first generation not directly exposed to dioxin ? inherited their health conditions through cellular changes controlling how their genes were turned on and off, the researchers reported.

The findings add to a body of research suggesting that the health consequences of exposure to environmental chemicals might be passed to future generations.

?Not only does the individual exposed get the disease, but it?s transmitted to great-grandchildren with no exposure,? said Michael Skinner of Washington State University, who is the senior author of the study, which was published in the journal PLoS One. Skinner is a pioneer in epigenetics ? the study of inherited changes in gene expression.

Dioxins, which have been linked to cancer, reproductive disorders and other health problems, are industrial byproducts created by waste incinerators and other processes.

The dioxin doses used in the study were low for lab rats, but are higher than most people?s exposures from the environment. The study raises questions that won?t be easy to answer about people exposed to dioxins from food and industrial sources.

?The study is a nice demonstration of the large scope of damage from a low-dose dioxin,? said Jennifer Wolstenholme, a biochemist who specializes in epigenetics at the University of Virginia. She was not involved with the research.

One of the most interesting findings, she said, was that multiple organ systems were affected in the rats.

Dioxins have declined in food and the environment over the past few decades because emissions from many industries, including pulp and paper mills, smelters and waste incinerators, have been regulated.

The new study focused on a specific dioxin, known as TCDD, a component of the herbicide Agent Orange that was used during the Vietnam War.

Among Vietnamese people exposed to Agent Orange, a high rate of cancers has been found, and their children have had many birth defects and other health problems, too.?Vietnam veterans from the United States also were highly exposed, and the U.S. government has determined that certain cancers and other disorders are ?presumptive diseases? in veterans who handled Agent Orange.

The new study examined how dioxin exposure affects a person?s epigenome ? a road map of chemical changes to DNA and associated proteins. As a fetus develops, its epigenome is reprogrammed, and it can be permanently altered by exposures. The epigenome is then passed down through generations ? along with susceptibility to adult-onset disease.

?The cause of the higher rates of disease in these [third generation] animals was not due to direct exposure, but rather through transmission of changes in the code that regulates gene expression,? said Abby Benninghoff, who specializes in epigenetics at Utah State University. She was not involved with the study.

Scientists have long known that environmental exposures can cause genetic mutations. But now epigenetics experts are finding that some exposures seem capable of changing how genes are expressed, or turned on and off, without actually damaging the genes. These changes then can be inherited by future generations.

The findings are not directly applicable to humans, researchers said. The way the animals were dosed is not the same way people are exposed to dioxins, and the moms were dosed for a few days ? roughly similar to the first trimester ? which does not mimic typical human exposure that is low and gradual but builds over time, Wolstenholme said. Humans and rats also clear dioxin from their bodies differently, she said.

Chinese court upholds fine against dissident Ai Weiwei

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese court upheld a $2.4 million tax evasion fine against China's most famous dissident Ai Weiwei on Thursday, ending his long legal battle with the authorities but paving the way for him to be jailed if he does not pay.

The loss of Ai's second appeal in a higher court means that the world-renowned artist could risk arrest if he does not pay a remaining fine of around 6.6 million yuan ($1.05 million), in a case that has further tarnished China's poor human rights reputation.

He has paid a bond of 8.45 million yuan already lodged with the tax authorities to contest the tax charge.

Ai, whose 81-day detention last year sparked an international outcry, told Reuters he will not pay the remaining fine as that would be tacit acknowledgement of the case's legality, which he has always maintained is trumped up.

Ai said he is uncertain whether he faces arrest if he doesn't do so.

"If I need to go to jail, there's nothing I can do about it," Ai said. "This country has no fairness and justice, even if I've paid the 6 million yuan, I still could possibly go to jail. They don't need an excuse to arrest me - they can always find another excuse at any time."

The case is widely seen by activists as an attempt to muzzle the outspoken artist, who has repeatedly criticized the Chinese government for flouting the rule of law and the rights of citizens.

Ai, 55, had asked the Chaoyang District Court to overturn the city tax office's rejection of his appeal against the 15 million yuan ($2.38 million) tax evasion penalty imposed on the company he works for, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd, which produces his art and designs.

Ai, who has waged a near five-month long legal battle with a Beijing tax agency, said he could not appeal further and has not enough cash to pay the remaining 6.6 million yuan, adding that the tax agency has not given him a deadline to pay.

Government efforts to silence Ai have frequently backfired, as demonstrated by an outpouring of public sympathy - and cash - in response to the tax penalty.

Ai had collected more than 9 million yuan, he says he will start to return, from about 30,000 donors, to pay the bond. Many of Ai's supporters folded money into paper planes that were flown over the walls of his home.

Earlier, an angry Ai, who was allowed to attend court in person for the first time and without an obvious police presence, said he scolded the judge for being a "shame and a disgrace".

"It (the court) didn't respect the facts or give us a chance to defend ourselves; it has no regard for taxpayers' rights," he told reporters.

He said the court had flouted Chinese law by not providing a written notification of the appeal verdict three days in advance, and only notifying his wife, Lu Qing, by telephone earlier this week. One of his lawyers, Pu Zhiqiang, is in France and could not make it back in time.

Ai's loss of his appeal is a predictable outcome in a country where the courts, controlled by the ruling Communist Party, toe the government line. It also underscores Beijing's increasing intolerance of dissent ahead of a tricky transition of power later this year.

"I never imagined the court would disregard the facts this much, be so unreasonable and so insulting," Ai said.

Our opinion: A costly piece of art leaves us asking, what is NYRA thinking? Horse racing should be an asset in New York, not one bumble and scandal after another.

When you embark on a project, it?s useful to ask: What would success look like? We can?t think of a more appropriate question when it comes to the future of thoroughbred racing in New York.

We sure know what success wouldn?t look like. It wouldn?t look like the 2011 annual report of the state?s Franchise Oversight Board, which detailed how the New York Racing Association lost even more money than 2010, despite taking in millions of dollars more in bets and getting help from new video slots.

Nor would it look like a $250,000 piece of vanity art commissioned by an association that is forever crying poverty while managing the kind of business that any mob boss would give his right arm to run.

What was NYRA thinking when it hired an artist to paint a mural that featured some of NYRA?s own leaders? If NYRA had a quarter of a million dollars burning a hole in its pocket, it should have sent it to the state treasury to start making up for all those years that the association stiffed taxpayers on their fair share of proceeds from their own racetracks.

It?s bad enough that as the Times Union?s James M. Odato reported Thursday, NYRA commissioned this art in a year when it lost $24 million. It?s all the more insulting that it was ordered by Charles Hayward, NYRA?s now-ousted CEO, at a time when NYRA was secretly overcharging certain bettors to the tune of $8.5 million. And for Mr. Hayward to give this commission to a friend smacks of crass cronyism.

When it comes to what not to do, a new NYRA Reorganization Board has plenty to work with as it embarks on a three-year project to reform the association and the management of horse racing in New York. The list of ?don?ts? stretches back through years of mismanagement and corruption.

As for how racing in New York should look, three words come to mind: professional, transparent and invisible.

A professional racing operation would operate like a public benefit corporation, not like a private club whose members seem to think they?re living off a taxpayer-supported trust fund. It used to be called the sport of kings, but horse racing has long been subsidized by the ordinary citizens of New York, and they deserve a return on their investment.

A transparent racing operation would open its records and operations to taxpayer scrutiny, just as a public agency is required to do, and its salaries would be more in line with the public sector than a Vegas casino. That would be the case even if the state decides, as some have suggested, to hand the management of the state?s tracks over to a for-profit company. Before that happens, though, New York should explain why this can?t be done by a public or nonprofit entity.

As for invisible, NYRA, or whoever is running the show, wouldn?t overshadow the excitement of great horse racing. Its blunders wouldn?t interfere with the economic benefits that race tracks would be spinning off to their surrounding communities, nor would its scandals limit the millions of dollars that are supposed to be earmarked for ? remember this? ? education.

In short, racing, and all its promised benefits, would be the headlines. NYRA? We?d hardly know it was there.

What's on Mars? Evidence of water (+video)

On Thursday, NASA's Mars Curiosity rover identified what are believed to be rocks moved by water that once flowed on the Red Planet. Curiosity's further exploration is hoped to determine whether Mars was once inhabited by microorganisms.?

Curiosity, a roving chemistry laboratory the size of a small car, touched down on Aug. 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile (five-km) -high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

Scientists suspect the mound, known as Mount Sharp, is the remains of sediment that once completely filled the crater. Analysis of a slab of rock located between the crater's north rim and the base of Mount Sharp indicate a fast-moving stream of water once flowed there.

Images taken by Curiosity and released on Thursday show rounded stones cemented into the rock, which rises like a piece of jack-hammered sidewalk from the planet's surface.

The stones inside the rock are too big to have been moved by wind, Curiosity scientist?Rebecca Williams, with the Planetary Science Institute in?Tucson,?Arizona, told reporters on a conference call.

"The consensus of the science team is that these are water-transported gravel in a vigorous stream," she said.

The rock is believed to be from the floor of an ancient stream which was once between ankle- and knee-deep.

The analysis is based on telephoto images taken by the rover, which is en route to a patch of land named Glenelg where three different types of rock intersect.

Scientists have not yet decided if the slab of rock warrants a chemical analysis, or if there are better targets for Curiosity to look for the building blocks of life and the minerals to preserve it.

"The question about habitability goes beyond the simple observation of water on Mars," said lead scientist John Grotzinger at the?California Institute of Technology.

"Certainly flowing water is a place where microorganisms could have lived. This particular kind of rock may or may not be a good place to preserve those components that we associate with a habitable environment," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission?is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

Challenging Careers: In Teaching, Disciplinary Methods Are Crucial

With the pervading issues of bullying and relentless teasing in schools today, discipline and behaviour methods implemented by the teachers and other school officials are more important than ever. The school should be a safe place where children can develop to their fullest potential, which makes teaching one of the most challenging careers. In teaching children, you are given the chance to create a lasting impact on their lifetime and you, as a teacher, want to make sure that you're not just a repository of knowledge, but you're also an important player in their development and support system.

These days, perhaps due to their heavy load, a lot of teachers have the idea that all they need to do is deliver the lessons and it's already up to the children to absorb or learn what they can. Such teachers never fail to earn the ire of educators of old and of the parents, of course. A lot of learning theories have defined the role of teachers as skilled and trained professionals who foster learning - which means that if making sure that the students learned is not the goal, then such teachers should not be called teachers at all.

Fostering learning is always carried out with disciplinary methods. Every student has his own set of behaviours that need to be regulated inside a classroom. These methods are not to suppress them but more to teach them proper decorum in a social setting where one's behaviour can directly affect the other members' own behaviour and learning ability. Also, disciplinary methods are important in developing values of obedience, respect and responsibility in children. They also play a big part in teaching children that certain actions have corresponding consequences that they will not like or could hurt them greatly.

Disciplinary methods are actually a sticky issue because you cannot count on one method to work for all; there are so many considerations behind the type of disciplinary action to take for certain behaviours. There are kids who really have a tough time following instructions due to ADHD, or they're suffering from an emotional upheaval caused by divorce, death of a loved one, et cetera. Teachers have to go beyond the conventional ways of taking disciplinary action and really research about more appropriate methods considering the children's emotional make-up. It would be greatly beneficial as well to learn about the other elements that contribute to unruly behaviour such as diet, lack of sleep and environmental influences.
