Challenging Careers: In Teaching, Disciplinary Methods Are Crucial

With the pervading issues of bullying and relentless teasing in schools today, discipline and behaviour methods implemented by the teachers and other school officials are more important than ever. The school should be a safe place where children can develop to their fullest potential, which makes teaching one of the most challenging careers. In teaching children, you are given the chance to create a lasting impact on their lifetime and you, as a teacher, want to make sure that you're not just a repository of knowledge, but you're also an important player in their development and support system.

These days, perhaps due to their heavy load, a lot of teachers have the idea that all they need to do is deliver the lessons and it's already up to the children to absorb or learn what they can. Such teachers never fail to earn the ire of educators of old and of the parents, of course. A lot of learning theories have defined the role of teachers as skilled and trained professionals who foster learning - which means that if making sure that the students learned is not the goal, then such teachers should not be called teachers at all.

Fostering learning is always carried out with disciplinary methods. Every student has his own set of behaviours that need to be regulated inside a classroom. These methods are not to suppress them but more to teach them proper decorum in a social setting where one's behaviour can directly affect the other members' own behaviour and learning ability. Also, disciplinary methods are important in developing values of obedience, respect and responsibility in children. They also play a big part in teaching children that certain actions have corresponding consequences that they will not like or could hurt them greatly.

Disciplinary methods are actually a sticky issue because you cannot count on one method to work for all; there are so many considerations behind the type of disciplinary action to take for certain behaviours. There are kids who really have a tough time following instructions due to ADHD, or they're suffering from an emotional upheaval caused by divorce, death of a loved one, et cetera. Teachers have to go beyond the conventional ways of taking disciplinary action and really research about more appropriate methods considering the children's emotional make-up. It would be greatly beneficial as well to learn about the other elements that contribute to unruly behaviour such as diet, lack of sleep and environmental influences.
