? April 26, 2013Posted in: Camden County, Cape May County

CapeMayFoodAndWine-014

Is it really spring? Like really really? We keep on getting the head fake of warmer temperature only to have Ol? Man Winter dunking in our collective grills with a blast of cold air. Well, to that I say hack the bum and send him flying into the front row seats. (It?s the basketball playoffs, after all ? when things get a bit rougher). And while he recovers, get yourself out to the Cape May Spring Festival and enjoy a number of food and drink events going on from now until May 5. The events include a special Cape May Wine Trail on Saturday from 12PM to 5:30PM, which includes tastings at Natali, Hawk Haven and Willow Creek as well as lunch at Aleathea?s at The Inn at Cape May. Next Saturday is the annual Chocolate Championship Tour and Tasting that takes you throughout the town to a number of the beautiful inns. The tasting runs from 1PM to 3PM.

Friday night is a Food Flight, and a ?Taste of Italy? one at that, at Fitzpatrick?s Deli & Steakhouse in Somers Point. The dinner starts at 6PM and costs $50 per person. Make sure you reserve ahead of time.

Then on Saturday it?s the big boffo Somers Point Bayfest on Bay Avenue. The admission is free and the food vendors will be plentiful.

Saturday is also the day (or should I say night) of the Spring Beer Fest at Blue Monkey Tavern in Merchantville. The beer lineupo they will have looks impressive. The beer fest runs from 5PM to 9PM and it is $35 per person.

And all weekend long is the Pinelands Reserve Wine Trail Spring Trolley Tour, with tours at 11:30AM, 1PM and 1:30PM. The cost is $30 per person, and it is strongly suggested that you call and reserve your tickets in advance.

If you care to venture out of South Jersey?

It?s the annual Shad Fest in Lambertville this weekend!

And in Philly it?s the Craft Beer and Oyster Fest at Doc Magrogan?s Oyster House.

Here is your cooking class schedule for this weekend:

Friday: Date Night: Paris in Spring at Sur la Table in Marlton and Teens and Tweens: Asian Delights at Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown.

Saturday: Gardening 101: Secrets from an Organic Farmer at ExtraordinaryED in Collingswood, Frozen Flavors: Ice Cream & Gelato and Date Night: Wine Country Cuisine at Sur la Table, Celebration Brunch at Viking Cooking School at Harrah?s Resort in Atlantic City, Light Latin at Kitchen Kapers, and the first class of Fundamentals of Fine Cooking II at The Culinary Arts Center at Burlington County College in Mount Holly.

Sunday: Inspired by the Hit Movie Julie & Julia ? Mastering French Cuisine and Date Night: In The City at Viking Cooking School, Brewing & Cooking with Coffee and Italian Family Favorites at Sur la Table, and Cupcake Corner: Under the Sea at Kitchen Kapers.

About John Howard-Fusco

John Howard-Fusco started eating at a very young age, and hasn't stopped since. In between bites he managed to: finish high school in Willingboro (his hometown), graduate from Stern School of Business at NYU, work in financial services for 15 years, get married and have two beautiful children. Suddenly, it dawned on him that maybe he could write about all this eating business. And so he did, and so he does.

(AP) ? Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have agreed on a contract extension.

The Packers announced the deal Friday, but didn't say how long it was for or how much he'll be paid. It's likely, however, that the 2011 NFL MVP will be among the highest-paid players in the league.

Locking up Rodgers was a priority for the Packers, who also reached a long-term extension with linebacker Clay Matthews this month. The Packers are 53-27 in Rodgers' five years as a starter, and he led them to the Super Bowl title following the 2010 season.

He has thrown for 21,661 yards and 171 touchdowns, and has had a quarterback rating of 101.2 or better in all but one season as a starter.

His quarterback rating of 122.5 in 2011 is an NFL record.

Sprint announces Q1 2013 results: 1.5 million iPhones sold

Sprint announces Q1 2013 results: 1.5 million iPhones sold

Sprint has announced their Q1 2013 financial results and in addition to a lot of other, sometimes weirdly acronym'd, numbers, out of 5 million smartphones sold, 1.5 million were iPhones.

Eighty-six percent of quarterly Sprint platform postpaid handset sales were smartphones, including more than 1.5 million iPhones sold during the quarter. Forty-three percent of iPhone sales were to new customers, a rate that continues to outperform larger competitors.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse:

This is a transformative year for Sprint and we?ve gotten off to a good start. Record Sprint platform service revenue and subscriber levels fueled our performance. We achieved significant Adjusted OIBDA* growth while investing heavily to improve our network, expanding our 4G LTE footprint and offering customers the best smartphones with truly unlimited data plans.

The iPhone representing 30% of smartphone sales isn't as dominating a number as we've seen from AT&T and Verizon, but then again, Sprint isn't AT&T or Verizon.

Now that T-Mobile is in the mix, it'll be interesting to see what, if anything, happens to Sprint's share of iPhones going forward.

Ore. department's concrete police pig back in pink

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) ? The Astoria Police Department's concrete pig is back in the pink and ready for another 20 years of duty.

The Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/ZPr4hW ) the pig was dropped off at the station in 1993 by someone who didn't stay to explain the gift.

Unoffended, the police promptly adopted the animal and left it in place.

But two decades took a toll, washing off the pink paint, pitting the surface, loosening the ears.

Michael Peden, the 16-year-old grandson of a department administrator, took on the restoration chores as an Eagle Scout project.

Now the department has stationed the restored pig in a more prominent location, as it said in a news release, "at the entrance to the Police Department parking area, watching the comings and goings of police officers."

Ryan Lochte on critics: Haters are 'a given'

(AP) ? What would Ryan Lochte do if he became the brunt of a joke? Ignore it.

The 28-year-old Olympic gold medalist-turned-reality TV star addressed the ups-and-downs of fame at the E! Network Upfront in New York on Monday.

He's experienced both in recent days.

A new reality series "What Would Ryan Lochte Do" premiered Sunday on E! It debuted on the heels of an unflattering video that went viral over the weekend where he appeared in an interview via satellite with Fox affiliate WTXF in Philadelphia. The segment itself? while rather dull and maybe a little awkward? became the most entertaining when it ended. The anchors doubled over with laughter over Lochte's response to some of their questions and wondered out loud how producers would have enough material to put together a TV show about him.

On the E! carpet, Lochte said he takes any naysayers in stride.

"The more known you get in the public eye, the more haters you're gonna have and that's a given," he rationalized. "But, you know what? All the haters, all the name calling goes through one ear (and) out the other and I don't mind it. The way I look at it the more haters I have it means I'm doing something right."

He credits swimming with helping him to block out the noise of negativity.

"With swimming I've been known to cut out everything. The crowd, everything. Just focus on me and my lane and what I need to accomplish so I can do that pretty much in life too."
