As you start to use your central heating for the first time since last Winter, you might be unfortunate enough to notice some problems start to occur if you haven?t maintained your heating system over the Summer months. A common problem we get contacted about is noisy radiators.
Often this will be caused by single direction thermostatic radiator valves being installed with the water flow going in the wrong direction. You can see if the valve has been installed in the right direction by an arrow printed on it ? this should point in the direction of flow.
Many valves are now bi-directional, and will have the arrow pointing in both direction (see picture), so this mainly applies to older valves.
Installing an auto bypass valve can help with this as it will regulate the flow through bypass circuits when the thermostatic valves are closing.
If you?re hearing a constant gushing sound from the radiators then that might indicate a debris build up within the radiator. With your radiators turned on, try running your hands over the entire surface of them. If you feel random spots which are considerably cooler than the rest then that is a sign that debris has built up.
The best way to fix it is having a heating engineer perform a Powerflush. This is a process of running a water based chemical solution through the entire central heating system that breaks down all the debris and sludge has that built up and flushes it straight out of the system.
Having this done on an older central heating system can actually improve its efficiency as well. You can read more about Powerflushing here.
